Discovering Nova Scotia: The Introduction

Recycled air blows down on me as if I need to be reminded I am sitting in a pressurized chamber flying over 30,000 feet in the air.

The source of oxygen in the plane is just one small accident away from escaping altogether, but I can finally breathe again after weeks of hectic schedules. It’s not every day that your partner wins an all-expenses paid trip to Nova Scotia that includes a week of the finest food and accommodations the province has to offer, spa vouchers and historical tours. All that from a simple photo he took in our ‘backyard’ of Banff National Park.

Privateer’s Wharf, Halifax

We disembark from the plane and inquire at the Ground Transportation desk about our reserved pick up. Eventually our driver pulls up his sedan and we begin our journey into Halifax. Exhausted from having left home at 4 a.m., we listen to our driver talk about all the things he loves most about his home province. Pausing briefly between thoughts, he wraps his lips tightly around one of his few remaining teeth and sucks before he continues with his stories. “There are two bridges leading into the city of Halifax,” he says. “And even though the second one was built forty years ago, they still call it the New Bridge.”

We take the Old Bridge into downtown Halifax as our driver describes the impact of cruise ships on the local industries. Halifax has always had lucrative industries, it turns out, and the millions of dollars that are spent by the 2000-3000 cruisers that descend on the city for the day is no exception.

After checking into the Courtyard Marriott close to the waterfront, we make our way down to Five Fisherman, a seafood restaurant rich with history and adorned with tasteful nautical decor, timber and stained glass windows. While I enjoy my seafood medley, Paul attacks a lobster, sending the garlic butter on a lofty voyage across the table. Our friendly server offers no direction other than to tie a bib around Paul’s neck and ‘agree’ with us that this must happen all the time.

Later, we came across “5 Easy Steps to Eating a Lobster” in a culinary guide to Nova Scotia. It tooks us no more than 2 seconds to glance at each other and burst into laughter.
